The history of the tank

How did you begin with your tank? Have you had some problems in the past?

I began to fill the tank in july 2015, but with no idea about what I would have liked to host inside it. Well I know it’s an error, but sometimes we want a thing, in this case the reef aquarium, but we don’t know how to develop the whole idea. So we start and we watch how the things evolve. The only thing I had decided was the adoption of Berlin Method, but with a small amount of live rocks. Only 25 kg in my tank of, more or less, 340 liters, with a ratio of 1:14, much less than 1:5 the books say. I added a few centimeters of sand, because I don’t like to see aquarium without sand, and this also if it is against my idea that sand in aquarium could be counterproductive… but I like it… so…”

I left the aquarium unattended until january 2016 when I began to insert the firsts corals and frags, coming from shops and friends. So many problems during the firsts months, especially thanks to instability of the triad (calcium, magnesium and carbonates). So I decided to give a chance to Balling method. I implemented the Fauna Marin one, and from that moment, I have had a very important growth and improved stability. I found the… ehm “my” key for my reef aquarium”.

Only one year later the corals had covered almost entirely the rocks and the aquarium rose to life with only 26  fish. Following the guideline of the teacher and mostly friend Danilo Ronchi aka DaniReef”.

Yes we snigger. But, what can we do, the aquarium with a lot of fish is always wonderful.

Using the Balling Method

Not everything is perfect. Also today, with a great growth of corals, and the relatively youth of the tank, the triad is not perfectly stable. Particularly I have problem with Kh, that sometimes goes under 6 ppm, despite the great quantity of calcium carbonate that dosing pumps puts inside the water. Calcium and Magnesium are perfect and thanks to my skimmer, I succeed to have the pollutants very close to zero, and this despite the many fish I host“.

When I more time to spend for the aquarium, I use also the Fauna Marin Zeolight. This product helps me to lower the pollutants and so the colors of the corals improve a little bit. In the tank I prefer to host SPS corals, but I prefer their wellness than their colors. Anyway I have some LPS and one softie, a present from my beloved lady“.

What is your rule about water change? And what about daily duties?

I’m very regular with water change, I try to change the 10% of water, about 30 liters, every 15 days, always with Fauna Marin salt. A salt I think very light and complementary to their Balling method. After all I use also the new Bacto Blend from Fauna Marin every 15 days, a product that releases bacteria in the water column“.

That’s perfect, and we can say that you have implemented a very easy method to operate your aquarium. But nevertheless a method that can guide you towards great results.
