The Magnet

The glass attachment system is guaranteed by a powerful magnet, which works with glasses up to 19 mm thick.

I can personally witness for the strength of the magnets, they are also easy to use and to manipulate under water. They are also provided with an o-ring to avoid spoiling the tank glasses.

This attachment method has the only aesthetic disadvantage of a more protruding pump when compared, for example, to the Tunze method, but it certainly is more stable thanks to the fitting pin placed behind the pump body.

While this magnet works well with glasses up to 19 mm thick, Rossmont sells as an accessory a more powerful one, which keeps its hold on glasses up to 25 mm thick.

Noise

Rossmont provided its Mover pumps of a VAS system, that is a Vibration Absorbing System which should keep the pumps rather silent.

We verified this by measuring the environmental noise.

Immediately afterwards, we measured the pump noise.

We found a 1,5dB difference. It’s not much, the pump noise is really just slightly audible. I’ll tell you more, during my tank maturation, when I kept the pump in a large container with live rocks placed right behind my sofa, I often needed to go and check if the pump was still working because I couldn’t hear it from the distance of only a couple of metres!

To measure the noise I used, as always, the professional phonometer VOLTCRAFT 320, digital phonometer IEC 651 Type II  which have been sufficiently accurate seeing the results. Considering the type of noise we needed to measure, all the measures were recorded with dBA wave attenuation. The measurements were taken with closed windows, the phonometer placed on a tripod 1 meter distant, and with minimum intervals of 120 seconds between measurements.

Power consumption

It is quite hard to measure instant energy consumption. In order to do so, I used a current probe which recorded an electric current of 0,134 A. This is only a partial measure, as it has been impossible to record the power factor (cosφ). Anyway, we can still make some interesting deductions.

The adsorbed current, or the power consumption, results as follows:

Rossmont Mover Mx 15200 with a flow rate of 15.200 l/h: 0,134A x 230 V = 30,82 watt x cos(fi)

Usually, a pump with a neodynium magnet, like the Mover, has a cos(fi) with a value around 0,85, while a pump with a ferrite magnet has a cos(fi) around 0,6. In this case the energy consumption of the Mover MX15200 equals 30,82 watt x 0,85 = 26,2 watt. A legitimate number, very close to the 24 watt declared. We should still consider that the cos(fi) was assumed, having not being able to measure it.

We want to underline that the apparent power of 4,62 watt in this case, 30,82-26,2 watt, is not counted by the home electrical counter, so we will not spend more. Moreover, this happens with any pump, Rossmont is not an exception.

Considering an energy consumption of 26,2 watt, and the energy price in Italy of 0,27 euro per kwh, we could use this pump continuously for a whole year with a power consumption of 230 kwh, which will clearly be the same using a pair of Mover Mx 15200 alterately for 6 hours each, resulting in 62,1 euro per year, or 5,17 euro per month. Obviously you have to change the euro per watt to find your right cost.

The impeller has a fantastic unlocking mechanism, we simply need to unlock a lever that the impeller comes out into our hands. Nice and easy.

As it can be seen in the picture, the impeller lock is combined with the unlocking system, which is incorporated in the impeller itself.

The Flow Conveyor

The flow angle is pretty wide, in my opinion it is optimal for almost any marine tank, and Rossmont states that the angle is 120°. Rossmont also supplies a nozzle to reduce the angle, for a more direct flow that becomes deeper with a 60° angle.

As I stated before, I prefer a wider, softer flow, and suggest you do the same. The opportunity given by the add-on nozzle, however, improves the pump versatility, especially important for the many different types of corals hosted and the aquarium set-ups.

The MX 15200 direct flow can be challenging to use because of its strength, and it is therefore suitable in very specific cases, but it surely is an excellent addendum to its little MX sisters.

The pump does not come with a power supply, but only with a normal (Italian) plug.
